Yoga Certification in India: A Legacy, Not a Trend

Certified Yoga Professionals

43,563 (1,470 from overseas)

Yoga Volunteers

Over 6.5 lakh (626 foreign nationals)

New Delhi, June 24, 2025: As yoga continues to captivate the world, India isn’t just the birthplace of yoga—it’s also the global benchmark for authentic certification. While the West is just catching up with standardized yoga credentials, India has long been ahead of the curve with a government-led, internationally recognized certification framework.

Established in 2018 by the Ministry of Ayush, the Yoga Certification Board (YCB) has been quietly transforming the yoga education landscape—ensuring that what the world practices remains rooted in Classical Indian Yoga.

With over 100 accredited Yoga Training Institutions and 26 certified Personnel Certification Bodies, YCB is shaping a generation of highly qualified Yoga professionals, trained and tested under strict global standards. In fact, nearly 20% of examinees do not pass, underlining the high bar for quality and credibility.

Global Footprint, Indian Soul

  • 43,563 certified Yoga Professionals, including 1,470 from overseas
  • Over 6.5 lakh Yoga Volunteers, including 626 foreign nationals
  • Certified professionals active in 90 countries, with volunteers in 50 countries
  • 9 international yoga training institutions and 1 foreign certification body under YCB

Unlike many private players in the global space, YCB is a government-backed board dedicated to Classical Yoga—a fact that lends it unparalleled legitimacy. With plans underway to propose YCB frameworks to ISO (International Standards Organization), India aims to establish Classical Yoga standards at a truly international level, guided by norms like ISO 17024 and 17065.

MDNIY: The Legacy Institution Behind India’s Structured Yoga Education

At the core of India’s yoga education is the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY)—the country’s premier yoga institute since 1976. MDNIY offers B.Sc., M.Sc., Diploma and specialized paramedical yoga programmes, producing over 2,000 certified graduates who are now at the forefront of global wellness leadership.

Yoga isn’t just India’s gift to the world—it’s also a responsibility India takes seriously. With YCB setting gold standards and MDNIY nurturing academic excellence, India exports more than yoga—it shares its heritage, values, and a centuries-old commitment to wellness.
